I think the way ubuntu is heading seems to be a huge shift in direction
compared to others, 

so you have ubuntu using mir and the rest of the community pretty much
heading towards wayland,   I know debian is heading or the Pi is but
from a server viewpoint it probably won't make that much different
unless you're running  gui on a server.
