[LUG] Ubuntu 13.04 Nvidia screen tearing

Whilst we're talking about new OS versions, has anyone else experienced this (google has at least a few other people who do)?
I'm getting massive tearing in video playback, scrolling through firefox
pages, even workspace transitions in gnome-shell. Every previous Ubuntu
version including 12.10 on the same hardware has been absolutely fine:
actually, Win7/8, Debian 6/7/8 and OS X 10.7/8 on exactly the same
hardware on the same hardware have all been fine, this is the first time
I've ever seen it. Needless to say it's very annoying and a complete
game-stopper unless it's very easy to fix (and it doesn't seem to be so
far).
I've tried numerous different nvidia driver revisions, a couple of
different kernels and some advanced tweaking of OpenGL, vsync and other
settings to no avail.
Anyone else getting this?

Clarification:

i5 w/16Gb RAM & Nvidia 8800 GTX
Ubuntu 13.04 amd64

Cheers
