So, after not having much use for a while (my i7 with Debian Testing is my current workhorse) I just got around to upgrading the bare-metal operating systems on my older i5: win7 ultimate to win8 enterprise and ubuntu 12.10 to 13.04. The OS X 10.8 system will also be upgraded to 10.9 shortly when it comes out, which completes the three mainstream consumer operating systems I keep on this machine. My thoughts after a couple of days of using and directly comparing win8 vs ubuntu raring? Vanilla, and out of the box, win8 is a better OS, simple as that. Ubuntu has devolved to the point of being almost unusable without extensive tweaking at this point. For win8 I simply installed cygwin to get ssh, bash, remote X and all the other unixy tools of goodness I need and it was ready for business - ubuntu needed a *lot* more work to get functional. Unity is a bad joke. It should also be pointed out that by default, ubuntu actually spies on you MORE than windows with the damned unity-shopping-lens and it's other privacy violating crap. What a sad, sad day. I remember when ubuntu was the great hope for the linux community, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy at this point...
