How did the Paignton Meet go today ?

Just me and Roly. We had a good chat and covered a wide range of topics,
caught up on each other's news, and talked about maybe going up to
London for the emacs conf in Camden on the 30th.

Topics, as I recollect, in no order:

1. Package managers in different distros.
2. Relative merits of Ubuntu and debian, their philosophies and aims.
3. Public key encryption, ssh, GPG, keyservers, web of trust.
4. GNU 'screen' use and customization.
5. tcsh vs bash
6. emacs and Lisp, dynamic languages, Python/Ruby/Smalltalk
7. The Mac's free/open-source underpinnings and Apple's FOSS contributions.
8. The future of linux
9. Me forgetting to bring the promised keyboard, having put it right
next to the front door so I wouldn't forget it. It's PS/2 BTW.
10. Differences between GNU and BSD userland tools.
11. Foreground/background job control in the shell.
12. Networking, WiFi bridging, (not) kinking UTP ethernet cable.
13. The excellent commandline-fu site.
14. Getting newbies going with confidence: 2.5 hours estimate.

Anything else Roly?

Sounds like a pretty interesting meeting. Sorry I couldn't make it, I was converting a daughter to Android :-) (kinda a long winded way, I was going to give her my old Galaxy S but accidentally broke it while changing the bezel... in the end I took out a new contract for her and now she has a Galaxy S3 Mini... very nice phone it is too, it still amazes me how much power you can hold in your hands these days :-D)... this weekend I'll introduce her to the joys of ZX Spectrum emulation :-)

Yes! It was a really enjoyable lug meet. Learnt heaps from Phil and had a really good natter :-)

It is great for a non-IT-professional, like myself, to be able to chat to folks like Phil (and many many others here) - really helped to lift some of the fog I have been trying to navigate through. :-)

I think Jo was going to come today. He popped in to my (new) place prior to the lug meet. Unfortunately I had just popped out to get a desk and was unable to contact him. Sorry about that Jo!

And, I think Phil has pretty much covered everything i asked about. lol. Thank you! :-)

Best wishes
roly :-)
