Video drivers.

We've got some of these at work and I had the same problem with Mint. Starting in safe graphics mode (or whatever it's called) works with the Live DVD but when it starts up normally from the hard drive we get the same issue.

How I managed to get around it was to start the machine in rescue mode (hold down the shift key I belive when booting grub, or in my case just hammer the shift keys until the grub prompt comes up!). Then start in rescue mode. You should be able to get to a root shell (if it asks for a root password just enter the password for the first user you create).

Then you can install the AMD FGLRX drivers from the repository (I believe it's the fglrx and fglfx-amdcccle packages). It's been a few days since I fathomed the issue, but IIRC I think I had to modify the xorg.conf to get it to use the fglrx driver.

It does work with those machines, it's just not so simple.

Out of interest, how are you connecting the monitor? Is it via VGA or HDMI/DVI? I had issues with VGA, didn't try a HDMI to DVI adaptor.
