How much memory does the PC have? I tried installing Xubuntu on a netbook with 512MB RAM, but it failed due to lack of memory - it went to a shell rather than a desktop though. You might have more luck with Lubuntu as that requires less memory (that said, last time I booted it up it failed to boot but I haven't had time to investigate yet!)

I'm trying to install xubuntu from cd onto an old pc. The install fails and sends me to a desktop to 'investigate further' without actually telling me what the fatal error it was that stopped the install.
I cant find any log files - any clues on how to ferret the problem out?

Its got 1.5G. I'm surprised your balked in 512 as it claims to run in 256. I've notice a few threads with install problems so it seems to be quite a common problem these days.
