Re: [LUG] /etc/hosts

Couple of points to add:

1. The name column can contain any number of whitespace-separated aliases. For example:

127.0.0.1 e-machine e-machine.local e-machine.sub.domain foo foo.local ...

2. One of the useful ways to use the technique Martijn was talking about is to have your /etc/hosts resolve vexatious domain names to something harmless (like localhost). There is a huge, well-maintained one out there containing all the banner-ad servers etc known:

http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

The site gives you the necessary caveats, describes tradeoffs, etc.
