Couple of points to add:1. The name column can contain any number of whitespace-separated aliases. For example:
127.0.0.1 e-machine e-machine.local e-machine.sub.domain foo foo.local ...
2. One of the useful ways to use the technique Martijn was talking about is to have your /etc/hosts resolve vexatious domain names to something harmless (like localhost). There is a huge, well-maintained one out there containing all the banner-ad servers etc known:
