Presumably if one has Asterisk, it can do what the Truecall box does?

Yes.

But I doubt it would be economical to elect to install Asterisk just
for that purpose?

Not normally.

run it on a sheeva/guru plug with an ATA - fairly cheap these days

The down side is that it needs a 2nd box to interface to the phone line ...

I have asterisk running on an old d600 laptop - the screen has been disconnected and the switch removed so the lid closes - it's shoved on a shelf in a rack and there it sits, only needing the occasional reboot and a blast with canned air to keep the vents clean -it's been running 24/7 on it since 2005!

The laptop cost nothing and the ATA (a sipura SPA3000 -pre linksys/cisco) cost me Â45 new so probably cheaper than a truecall box.

Minus the cost of your own time to set it up ;-)

Personally, I'd suggest that unless you have lots of time and patience don't go down the asterisk route - just get a truecall box.
