I don't immediately know, but is it possible he's enabled some sort of document tracking mode... I have used this in the past in Word, but it's did things like highlight changes and put short vertical bars at the left - maybe it's configurable?
Try exporting to plain text and re-import it - unless it's got lots of whacky tables, etc...
