Hm. Just checked Skypes fees - 2.9p connection fee and 1.4p a
minute. That's not that competitive, really. Proprietary format,
no phone support and they charge for it too.. Hmmm

If you use Skype for calls to phones extensively, they also offer
subscriptions with varying amounts of inclusive minutes, up to
"unlimited" (5 euros/month for calls to UK landlines).

I don't pay for any of my calls...

In which case, Skype's fees are not very competitive ;-)

However, if the reason you don't pay for them is because they are included in another subscription (e.g landline rental with inclusive calls) then it may be worth comparing e.g. landline with no inclusive calls + Skype (or other VOIP provider).

What do other VOIP services charge?
Ekiga et all - nothing to other internet based and they allow your to talk to other VOIP services for free -Skype (last time I looked) doesn’t. Skype is a wannabe tollbooth on the info highway you've already paid for. OK they do provide a bit of a service to land lines but they are not to be encouraged - they use their profit to get further in your way so they can charge you for the 'privilege'.
