http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/dists/lenny/ is still available....It doesn't have to be a UK repo anyway......maybe you have a bad install disk?

An alternative install method is to debootstrap your partition, then chroot it and build the rest from there. That's how I do my Debian installs.

Why not  Squeeze? Lenny, is "oldstable"
