Re: [LUG] BIOS Settings

I have recently been given/lent some copies of Ubuntu 10.04. When I decided to try it out I found that the computer ignored the CD/DVD drive when booting. I have checked the BIOS and that drive is top of the boot list.

I have had the computer since April 2006. It has occurred to me that the CMOS battery for the BIOS could be dying. This might cause the BIOS to revert to its defaults, which may well have the hard drive as first in the list.

Is this likely/possible please anyone? Or should I consider anything else?

Yes, it's possible. I've had a couple die after 4 years. They usually last a bit longer, but no harm replacing them.

They're a couple of quid in my local electrical shoppie - used in lots of things other than PCs so ought to be easy to get locally - e.g. our kitchen scales takes them too - and needs a fresh pair every 18 months or so...
