Re: [LUG] Home Server

Hi all,

I am looking for recommendations. I currently use a fit-PC 2.0 running Ubuntu Server at home. I use it for various purposes, such as Web Server, Samba server, Media streaming server, etc..

I like the fact that it is very low energy, so I don't mind leaving it running 24/7 as it uses less energy than most energy saving light bulbs.

The one thing I would like is a bit more capacity. Does anyone know of a device that does the same thing, with similar energy consumption for a similar price, but with capacity for at least one, but ideally 2+ 3.5 inch disks, rather than the one 2.5 inch disk that you can get in the fit-PC 2.0?

The nearest thing I have seen is Excito's Bubba server, but that looks quite expensive, and I don't need all the proprietary looking software.

    Any pointers would be appreciated.

Cheers

Ok, how about something like this...

Antec ISK 300-65 Case (has 5.25" drive bay and has 2 x 2.5" internal drive bays) - £52.99

(Review here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/Antec_ISK300-65)

ASRock Atom 330 1.6GHz motherboard (MiniITX with 2 memory slots and 2 SATA) - £75.95
http://linitx.com/viewproduct.php?prodid=12514

Startech 4 port low profile PCI SATA Raid card - £34.66

Startech 4 x 2.5" SATA Backplane Bay - £54.13
http://www.dabs.com/products/startech-com-4-x-2-5-sata-backplane-bay-5KMD.html

Kingston 1GB DDR2 667Mhz DIMM - £17.98
http://www.dabs.com/products/kingston-valueram-1gb-667mhz-ddr2-non-ecc-4NWB.html?refs=52310000

So you're looking at about £240 ish for this lot plus delivery (and drives on top). You'd be able to get 6 x 2.5" drives in there which assuming you can afford it would give you plenty of space.

I'd go for something along these lines myself but I can't convince the wife to let me spend that much. :-(
