I just wondered if there was something out there in open source land
which will resolve equations like this: 5a(3b+2a)-a(2a+3c) solving
them as best as can be done.

Have you seen Wolfram Alpha?

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=5a(3b%2B2a)-a(2a%2B3c)

if you can solve it in mathematica you can probably solve it in octave.

I lied - octave is a mathpad type thingy
you'll be wanting sage (or sagemath) which is a mathematica sort of thingy
But do learn the maths first!!!
