Re: [LUG] Bonding ADSL

G'day all,

Is it possible?

I have a location that has two ADSL lines and want to create a link to a server so we can upload stuff quicker.
I have searched and my knowledge is failing me.

I think I want to create a vpn and bond two ADSL routes together or something.
In my mind I can see it is possible.

It's possible, but not easy...

There are a few ways and even more words and teminology )-:

One is load balancing - this can give the appearance of more speed, but my experiences of it is that each individual user will only see one lines worth of speed to from a single site. If you had 2 8Mb lines, then 2 people could get 8Mb each, but one person would still only see 8Mb rather than 16Mb. Some routers support this - e.g. the Draytek 2800 series, and you can do it in Linux with some of the tools on the LARTC site. (but need to front all ADSL routers with a Linux box with at least 3 Ethernet ports)

The other is line bonding. This makes both lines look like one "fatter" line. In some cases it can be applied to more than 2 lines. (See multilink PPP)

The down-side is that you need rather more specialised kit at your end of the line, and an ISP that supports it with matching kit at their end. The last time I looked it was only possible on the old ADSL1 lines (ie. the 2Mb ones, forgotten the terminology). This may have changed though. (Certinaly Entanet only support it on 2Mb ADSL or SDSL lines)

Another way is if you have control over the far-end server, (and it's Linux) then you can use some Linux magic to create the bonding, but you need a local Linux router with 3 network interfaces - one to the local LAN, and one to each of your ADSL connections (or more) This gets fiddly and you'll likely be creating tunnels via each interface, then using multilink ppp to bond the tunnels together then possibly even run a VPN over it... and obviously only works to one desitination site (and I'm not sure if you then need 2 Interfaces or connections at the far-end.

Persionally, if you're not already doing it, (or have adsl2+), I'd look to getting a business-class service with "up to" 832Kb/sec upload speed. Or post DVDs (which one of my clients does) or use some sort of batch transfer arrangement/compression, etc. (Which I do for bulk data xfers overnight)
