Sounds promising. Might make it easier to recover mail, say if a Windows machine goes pop and you're going to replace it with Linux, then maybe the likes of Thunderbird and Evolution (or KMail/whatever KDE uses etc) could just import the contents of the PST file without it having to be copied to a Windows machine and imported that way (I'm assuming it isn't already possible to import mail from a PST into Thunderbird/Evolution/whatever running on Linux).

Also sounds like Microsoft pre-empting another anti-competition law suit if they show they are planning to open up Outlook?

More likely trying to screw things up - always thought Outlook and Exchange Server were just ways of making sure you didn't do things properly in the first place.
