Personally I'd stick with the rsync method.

Folks use to use this for database backup in the past.

You'd have a mirrored disk, add a third set of disks to the mirror, and when it was mirrored, you'd then detach the third set.

Main advantage is that the the database only had to quiesce momentarily to get a consistent backup (and restores were fast as well!).

Me I'd stick to rsync, or database exports (which can be done consistently), unless the above is essential. Even then one could use snapshots, and rsync.

Rare is the database that is so big that it won't have time/space to create a consistent dump. Messing around with system layer stuff to backup application stuff smacks of a design flaw me.

I like to keep things simple :)

Not sure if Grant (The OP) is actually keeping databases on the USB though...

I did once use the raid-1 mechanisms to duplicate a dozen disks for a router project once upon a time - worked a treat!

The (relatively) newer write-intent bitmaps in mdadm can really speed up re-synchronisation too.

dr:bd(r), anyone? :)
