The thing is, they used a custom case (which looks to me like a 19" rack mount case). It's possible that this was the limit which would fit in the case (I'm guessing it's probably about 3U). They also mentioned about cooling too in the article, maybe this was also a consideration. They mention they can run them on two fans but added more for redundancy, so maybe adding extra drives would also increase the cooling required, hence loosing the redundancy if a fan fails.

Still, I think what they have done is pretty cool even if they didn't add more drives per unit. It's still pretty good going.
