BBC podcasts are indeed readily available: my problem is listening to
BBC articles which are not "podcasted". eg to take one example: "Any
Questions" http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qgvj

I also listen to various other streaming audio presentations (for
example annual reports to financial analysts). I want to be able to
listen to some of these away from my computer (and fast forward through
some of the junk).

mplayer "works" and I can certainly write a bash script that will
download some of this stuff overnight and write to ogg. VLC has a nice
front end that would reduce some of the hassle
