It allows legacy devices to work with newer networks. So if you're using 
802.11g and have 'b' devices, you should set it to 'on'. Same if it's an 
'n' device and you have 'g' (or 'b') devices. I think they still work 
without it, but maybe not as well.

Probably no harm enabling it.
