Re: [LUG] Software Piracy

I think that the message has gotten out quite a way but getting it into newspapers would be quite a toughie I imagine.

That and some companies may have spent so long training staff under certain programs e.g. photoshop, flash, etc that porting their skillsets over to gimp, etc could prove costly also (admittedly, more in the short term than long term)

Open Office however, is quite simply a no-brainer for most companies I would have thought, particularly with the ability to read those stupid .docx formats in the more recent builds.

Maybe I might have a word to Chris about stocking some free Open Office CD's in Refresh later on, hmm.

In yesterday's Mail on Sunday (Feb 15) on page 70 there was an article
about software. The title was

High Cost of Illegal Software

Here are some quotes

.... last year the British Software Alliance took 294 legal actions
against firms using illegal software.

.... more than £400,000 in damages ...

... a further £1.47 million to buy replacement software ....

... urge companies to recognise the dangers of using unlicensed software...

As you can see the article was all about warning companies not to use
unlicensed software. But, there was no mention anywhere about open
source software, nothing to tell anyone that it is possible to avoid
both the hassle and the cost of the above problems.

Strange that, isn't it? Why can't companies, especially small
businesses, find out about the advantages of open source? The message
just isn't getting out yet, is it?
