When you play you want it not to skip so errors are 'ignored' where possible so the tempo is unchanged - most errors will be inaudible/ignored by the human ear. It has to get really bad before skipping occurs. Ripping is normally an attempt to copy the audio from the cd - and there are checks - data errors will be retried up to some limit or other. You may find that just copying the cd, as opposed to ripping works quickly but causes problems later. There may be software to help - there was years ago in the days of the green felt tip....
