FWIW, my company is a Nominet member and tagholder and can register
domains directly, partly for just that reason -- people who contract me
to do work for them often want me to just take everything off their
hands and some things are much easier to do if you're a tag holder and
have absolute control.

You think wrong :)  All Nominet members, without exception, pay £5+VAT
per domain registered irrespective of volume, and there is no other way
to register .co.uk domains.  Same applies for most of the other .uk
SLDs.
