I just installed opensuse 11.0 over ubuntu and was given the option of
which partitions to format. I formated only the / partition and not
home. I know this does remove software, but all your settings and data
are still there. So unless you have a lot of software that has to be
compiled "by hand" along with dependencies etc getting back to your
original state is a doddle.
