Yeah, if it's a standard 2.5" IDE drive then it's possible to get an 
external case for about £5 or so from the usual online suppliers.

Something like this for instance would be ideal (they do work really

With this I'm sure it would be possible to install something like Damn 
Small Linux onto the drive, although it may require a bit of tweaking 
after installation (for instance possibly updating bootloaders to tell 
them to use hda1 rather than sda1).

Sounds like something to try at a LUG meet.
