One of my computers has no internal drive, only an external USB hard
drive. Runs Debian perfectly fine, no problems whatsoever.

The only machine I've ever had a problem with USB drives is an oldish
laptop, and then only under Windows - the USB controller wasn't
supported by XP/2000, and neither is the sound card. Or the display, for
that matter. It runs Debian without a problem, though.
