My thanks for the help about installing kubuntu on my brother's Compaq. To recap I tried with the Live CD version and it would not work - much too slow. The suggestions about the problem being lack of RAM and using the alternate CD version were spot on. I had another go today and it installed a treat. Now I must completely convert him.
