No horror stories but I do have got some good news on amd64 - Debian wise:
amd64 is now included in Debian unstable and will soon be in testing too.
Users of unstable on amd64 are encouraged to change
their /etc/apt/sources.list to point to a Debian mirror now.
Users of testing need to wait a bit more, until Debian testing includes enough
amd64 packages. That should be soon
Users of stable: *NOTHING* changes.

This means that amd64 will soon be a fully supported Debian architecture and
should have suitable packages available within the same timeframe after
upload as i386, sparc, alpha and other platforms. It will also mean that
FTBFS bugs on amd64 (Fail To Build From Source) become just as important as
FTBFS bugs on i386 and will stop the package moving into testing (or etch) in
the same way. Previously, the lack of an amd64 binary for a package was just
ignored as amd64 wasn't keeping up. This should mean that testing is a
reliable Debian install for amd64.
