I use "dovecot" with POP (well IMAP actually but it doesn't care). It is very happy to have "user@domain" as the login.
Only thing, I wouldn't use the Debian stable "dovecot" is the mail is in mbox, it works fine with maildir, but is a bit suspect with mbox.
