[LUG] Linux Terminal Server Project (and Mac Linux)

Hi folks,

I was wondering if anyone has any experience of the Linux Terminal Server Project, or booting a Mac into Linux over a network?

I've decided after much nagging from the kids to setup a computer in each of their bedrooms. I want to keep the data they create centralized, and also limit what they have access to (i.e. net access etc).

I've got a Debian machine running again and I'm in the process of installing the LTSP packages.

One of the machines is a Duron 1.4 PC with a PXE boot compatible network card so I'm hoping that shouldn't be too much of a problem to get running (have got it running in a private network on VMWare).

The other machine is an old Indigo iMac running at 400Mhz. It's not particualy fast at running OS X 10.2 and for some strange reason, it keeps hanging for a minute or so in MacOS 9.2, so I figured using it as an LTSP client would be a better idea.

The only hurdle I've come across so far is finding a kernel to boot on the Mac. From what I understand, the LTSP packages include a basic version of X.org and a 2.4 & 2.6 kernel to enable it to boot and connect to the main server. Unfortunately the only instructions I've found on the Mac side relate to the really old NuBus Macs.

If anyone has tried anything similar, I'd love some advice on setting the Mac side up.

I'll keep you posted on my progress (or lack of! :-P)

Rob
