Thanks Simon, that helped

now users and databases created
david@xxxxxxxxx:/var/lib$ psql -l
       List of databases
  Name    |  Owner   | Encoding
-----------+----------+-----------
david     | david    | SQL_ASCII
template0 | postgres | SQL_ASCII
template1 | postgres | SQL_ASCII
trafstats | david    | SQL_ASCII
(4 rows)

trafstats still won't start mind you :-/

Mar 20 17:08:13 webserver postgres[12868]: [1] FATAL 1:  IDENT
authentication failed for user "david"
Mar 20 17:08:13 webserver trafstats[12867]: [timer]: Failed second
connecion to database: FATAL 1:  IDENT authentication failed for user
"david"
Mar 20 17:08:13 webserver trafstats[12865]: [main] Timer startup
responds NO GO, aborting.
