Quick question. Should I remove the link for the S14nfslock or S60nfs?

Academic question... tried removing the symlink S60nfs and got refused
with "file system is read only". That was when I booted Knoppix 3.4 and
tried to remove the NFS link to get Mandrake to boot.

Currently been on this about 6 hours... regrettably have now lost my
temper. I'm trying to do as Neil suggested and remove the NFS from
/etc/rc5.d but currently it's refusing to bedge saying the filesystem is
read only.

Try remounting the filesystem something like

mount -o remount -w /dev/hda1 /mnt/mountpoint

that should enable rw access but set hda1 and mountpoint to reflect your
setup! :-)
