OK, again crisis over. Turns out the device.map file was bad. Booted from Debian Sarge netinstall CD. Opened the console session. Mounted /dev/hda4 as /mnt Mounted /dev/hda1 as /mnt/boot Chrooted /mnt Mounted proc as /proc Edited (nano) /boot/grub/devices.map Added: (hd0) /dev/hda Saved file. ran: grub-install /dev/hda Everything went OK. Rebooted. Debian GRUB menu. Boot Debian from menu. All works nicely. Yay!
