Thanks for hints about unpacking MS-TNEF.  The tnef utility will be useful.

Knowing something of the format of the file I was looking for, I found it
and cut it out with an editor.  Perl could also be useful, or whatever is
your favourite penknife.  I still wonder what it is that MS-TNEF preserves
that MIME alone wouldn't - but whatever it is, I guess it is only of
interest to windows users.
