I would tend not to have it on the knee - unless it is being used in a light 
cycle like reading a chapter, then making a brief note  then on to reading.
Bad for the neck and back.

I tend to prefer to lie with it in front of me.

WIth two batteries in the machine I get around 4 hours, which is long enough 
for an afternoon for me.
