Yes but sendmail sucks - they are still discovering whole new classes of security problems with it.
Me I'd use Postfix and one of the many POP3 daemons available (teapop, popa3d, GNU pop3d).
I'd probably use Ilohamail instead of Squirrelmail - less featured but far simpler and does a simple POP3 using filesystem (no databases or anything) install - despite it being a bit buggy in places.
There is almost an embarassing choice of MTAs and POP3 servers, good webmail stuff is harder to find.
