That was me, and I had made the assumption that the backup was itself a
tarball as suggested in the URL I posted at the time.  I suggested
copying the tarball off the CD, changing permissions on *that* and then
unpacking the backup.  I'd hoped that changing permissions on the
tarball would change permissions on the files within.  Possibly a
mistaken hope.

Far more sensible to use tar because it allows you to save and restore the 
permissions. Read the manpage: man tar


True, I had assumed the backup was a tarball.
