Personal experiances are

Debian - server based, very good

Exim - Again, very good. You may want to look at exim 4 however

UW-IMAP - EWWWWWwwww.... dovecot :-)

procmail - powerful, runable by the MTA, standard, portable :-D

squirrelmail - very good also, there are a number of alternatives that
you may want to look at.


Both exim and dovecot have the ability, as has been suggested already,
to authenticate against MySQL databases... lib_nss_mysql is a great
package (there ya go Theo, free bit of PR for ya)
