Hi Alan,

I've tried Knoppix 3.4 as you suggested and indeed it does work! :) I
noticed during the boot process that it set the mouse to
/dev/input/mice
which I found interesting because the same device path in Mandrake 10
refused to budge. I'm going to try Peanut Linux 9.6 and see how that
goes.
Sooner or later I'll find a distro on a 2.6 kernel that behaves :)

If not I'll try installing Knoppix to the HD. I take it that isn't
too
taxing? ;)

Hi Julian,
The knoppix 3.4 live cd uses a 2.4 kernel by default, you have to give options at boot up to use the 2.6 kernel :
linux26 -uses the "experimental" 2.6 kernel
and you can specify other options using :
knoppix alsa (loads the advanced linux sound drivers)
home=scan (if you've saved your home directory to the hd)
myconf=scan (if you've saved your knoppix setup to the hd)

The boot line would read :

knoppix option1 option2

except for the linux 2.6 kernel option which (together with the others) would read :
linux26 alsa home=scan myconf=scan

You can find info on a hd install of knoppix at http://download.linuxtag.org/knoppix/KNOPPIX-FAQ-EN.txt

and more boot options are at http://download.linuxtag.org/knoppix/knoppix-cheatcodes.txt

Have fun ;-)
