I still think Debian's a bit tricky for a newbie - but
it's certainly a good way to learn.

Xmms is the standard player which most people use.

Totem is the default on a mandrake setup.

Kscd is the most popular with people who use KDE

Sometimes linux seems to have *too much* choice -
