the passphrase is to unlock the private key.

if you want to log in without being prompoted for it, use ssh-agent [1], or
remove the passphrase from the key (not recommended!)

At this stage, I /do/ want to be prompted for it, to show that I've got public 
key authentication working.  Which I haven't, by the looks of things :-(
