Re: [LUG] Samsung to use Trusted Computing

Fancy putting Microsoft or Samsung in charge of your PC?

Previously appearing in a few rare laptops, ExtremeTech reports on the first major computer manufacturer making a full scale Trusted Computing rollout. Samsung will now install the Phoenix Core Managed Environment (cME) BIOS in every computer they make. Previous Slashdot reports on this BIOS include Phoenix Bios to Incorporate DRM and Microsoft Taking Over the BIOS."

OK, so it is likely to be hacked, maybe along the lines of DeCSS.

Actually, after doing a little more reading, I came across this: http://www.research.ibm.com/gsal/tcpa/

IBM released a Linux driver for TCPA almost a year ago!

A key point from IBM's information is that TCPA is not DRM nor is it Palladium but a subset. It doesn't control any execution.
IBM are also working on releasing the entire TCPA source code under GPL.
The chip itself isn't "tamper resistant against owner attack" it merely "protects user data against software attack".

Hmm. This deserves a reappraisal.
