Thanks for your reply. I look fwd for advice on ISP,s.

Telnet and SSH are on the computer, but are they installed? The computer

To test if the installation is complete, try using
$ telnet localhost
To connect to your box without a monitor, telnet and SSH would need to
be running as a daemon (server). As you're bringing your monitor, we can
sort this out at the meeting.

does not have a modem installed, But I can bring a couple along. (I have a BT
Voyager also, but understand they are not supported).

We can have a go with the modem - internal PCI modems are sometimes
supported in Linux and there are established methods of finding the
correct driver.

There is a network card, but I have not tried using it for Linux yet.

Most network cards are recognised automatically. Try this as root:
# ifconfig

If you get any output detailing eth0, the card is OK. localhost (lo) should
always be configured by the system.

What I want to get installed is Java 2 SDK, as a group I belong to use Java

Simon, do you have the SDK on CD? Mark, how long would it take to

however. However having discovered GCC and curses.h I am playing with C on
the linux machine.

Covers exactly the ground you describe, first steps in C, using gcc and
output via ncurses.
One example worked from the book is on codehelp:

I will chuck my computer, kb and monitor, and a length of cable in my car,
and bring it up if it seems appropriate at the time. (That box is pure linux).

Definitely. We'll have various ethernet cables, hubs and a router to
make the other connections. There probably won't be a phone line to
finish testing any modem config. but I'll take a look.
