Has anyone else experienced problems running SUSE 9.0 (kernel 2.4.21) with

I rebuilt a home server using an ASUS SK8N motherboard, Opteron 144

pieces and experienced numerous lockups and slow performance.

All I can really suggest is that you try SuSE's AMD64 version... but it'll set
you back over £80 to buy the retail boxed version.
If you don't mind changing distribution you could also try the beta releases
of Mandrake or Fedora for AMD64.

Alternatively, you could always compile your own kernel...
