What do you mean by auto-network-detection?

For 802.11b you just set an ESSID of "ANY" and it just works whatever
platform as it is a protocol feature.

If you mean detecting random network hardware on boot - well it'll
depend on your distro but it is pretty good these days for wireless cards.
