Hi Gemma

Have a look at Linux Format this month and it will explain all your 
woes. Record companies are not producing CD's that are broken. It is an 
attempt to stop illegal copying.  I believe it is somewhat like a 
fridge manufacturer objecting to the way you use fridge because they 
don't like you storing carrots in it. The problem is the fridge 
manufacturer can't stop you doing this - the record companies can! Take 
the cd back and tell them it is faulty and you want one within copy 
protection.
