As I understand it, the main reason that Nvidia provide proprietary
drivers is that some of the code they use is someone else's IP, 
so they can't release a fully open source driver.

Of course, if they could provide a driver that didn't use this code, 
and thus could be released under an open source license this would be
a pretty good thing.
