Companies probably lack basic knowledge like
for i in LAN:
ssh i update-script
Tivoli is for big companies for IBM to exploit.

Very briefly I would say NFS server and BOOTP for clients.
Skolelinux which I have seen in Norway has the right approach.
They have the: server <-> workstation <-> thin client type model
