Excellent advice, Simon, thanks.

dselect made it easy to uninstall XFree86v4 and rollback to v3. 
Debconf then sorted out the XF86Config file to match. A simple Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
and X worked fine. I'm now using KDE2 - so the next job is to upgrade to 
KDE3. I haven't set up KMail on the laptop yet, so I'm posting this
using Konqueror and the members area. (therefore, unsigned.)
