For a new home user, I would indeed suggest the use of SuSE powerfull, sleek and easy to install.
I suspect that it would simply detect all of your hardware without too much battering, i mean encouragement... ;-)
What are your network settings in windows (i suspect it will be using DHCP, or "autoconfiguration") ? If DHCP is used.. simple.. use the same..
